What I am doing now

I teach structural analysis and the finite element method in the Department of Civil Engineering at BUET, at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and supervise research students in bridge engineering, rubber mechanics and concrete materials. Since October 2024 I have also delivered the Special Lecture on Infrastructure in bridge engineering at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Saitama University, Japan.

For the Government of Bangladesh I lead the Design Review Team for the Padma Bridge Rail Link on behalf of BUET, and since February 2026 I have sat on the National Advisory Team of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority for the renovation, widening and strengthening of the Jamuna (Bangabandhu) Multipurpose Bridge deck. Consultancy work is undertaken through the Bureau of Research, Testing and Consultation of BUET.

I chair the Bangladesh National Group of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), which hosts the Dhaka conference series Advances in Bridge Engineering and received the IABSE Vice President in June 2026. I serve as a Director of the American Concrete Institute Bangladesh Chapter and as Country Representative for Bangladesh of the Institution of Civil Engineers, United Kingdom. In March 2026 I was Faculty Advisor to the BUET team that placed fourth of 43 at the ACI FRP Composites Competition in Chicago.

My current research runs along four lines: constitutive models for high-damping rubber and their use in bridge bearings; fibre-reinforced polymer strengthening of low-strength brick aggregate concrete; structural health monitoring of bridges; and, with colleagues in electrical engineering, machine-learning methods for earthquake early warning. My term as Chairman of the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE) was completed in March 2025, and I was Director of BUET-JIDPUS until November 2024.
